As we conclude 2023, we want to express our gratitude for being a part of another significant year with us.
Dear Remedy community,
This year has been marked by important moments, achievements, and a mix of emotions. From the rebranding of our company in March to the release of Alan Wake 2 in late October, our journey together has been quite a ride.
After expanding to multiple simultaneous projects and reaching beyond Finland to Stockholm, Sweden, we refined Remedy's visual identity in March with a new logo after more than 20 years. The old logo's bullet in the letter R represented the Max Payne era, but now, Remedy is more than a single game—it's a diverse portfolio. The updated logo symbolizes our constant evolution and passion for creating exciting games.
As Remedy has embraced developing multiple games, our commitment to our in-house technology, Northlight, remains unwavering. Back in March we refined the Northlight logo to represent its multifaceted role at Remedy. We also started sharing a lot more about Northlight via our website including a video featuring some of the Northlight personnel discussing the tech's significance and its future. The feedback from our community and fellow development studios has been great about this, so we will be trying to do more on this front in 2024.
Summer brought excitement as we prepared for the release of Alan Wake 2. We did the gameplay reveal at PlayStation Showcase in May and revealed the original launch date of 17th of October.
In June, it was coffee time. We collaborated with Airam to produce Oh Deer Diner thermoses, which became a collector’s item almost immediately. Little did we know how hot this thermos would be and how many would be upset about not getting one. There will be plenty more Oh Deer thermoses coming in Q1 2024, so you can get yours more easily than before, also from a shipping standpoint.
Also in June, we showed off the Alan Wake 2 hands-off demo at Summer Game Fest Play Days at Los Angeles. The media meetings at the event resulted in over 100 articles about the game and we could feel the attention and anticipation for the game growing.
In August, we revealed the Dark Place -trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live show and demoed 40 minutes of gameplay in an independent cinema at Cologne during the event week. We wish we could do something like this for our community, but we have limited resources available. Still, doing an event for our community in the future is something we are very keen on.
September marked another milestone with a hands-on preview event in San Francisco and Los Angeles, building excitement for the launch.
Finally, October and the launch day arrived, but before that happened, we revealed our collaboration with Fried Music for Alan Wake 2: Chapter Songs, as well as with Makia Clothing and Fortnite.
After four years of hard work, Alan Wake 2 was finally released on October 27th, and much to our delight, to acclaim and accolades, showcasing the dedication and talent of our team.
We are excited about the content we got in the pipeline for 2024. However, the development and supporting teams are now on well-deserved holidays until early 2024. We need to recharge our batteries and play all these amazing games other developers and publishers put out in 2023.
In November, we came and conquered at The Game Awards, where Alan Wake 2 received honors for Best Narrative, Best Game Direction and Best Art Direction. A live performance by Poets of the Fall as Old Gods of Asgard featuring the cast from the game added a special touch to this achievement. Getting the musical performance to happen could warrant its own documentary, but without Epic Games, it never would have happened, so thank you to our most excellent publisher for enabling us to do cool stuff.
December concluded the year with a grand office party and launch celebration, where the Remedy team celebrated the success of Alan Wake 2. Some of us are still recuperating.
However, amidst the festive atmosphere, we faced a poignant moment as news broke of the passing of our long-time collaborator and beloved friend, James McCaffrey. As the iconic voice of Max Payne and Alex Casey, he has been with us almost 20 years and his impact on our games and our community is significant. The loss cast a shadow over the holiday season, serving as a reminder of the challenges and emotions inherent in the creative process.
As we bid farewell to 2023, a year filled with triumphs and farewells, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Remedy community: all our supporters be it press, partners or fans… Thank you for enabling us to do what we do. Here's to new adventures and continued collaboration in the coming year!
Warm regards,
Remedy Entertainment
